Recognising Ebola symptoms

Symptoms typically appear 2–21 days after exposure. Many early symptoms resemble malaria, typhoid or influenza — only a healthcare professional can diagnose Ebola through testing. This page is educational only.

If you have travelled to an outbreak area and develop fever, bleeding, severe weakness or confusion, seek medical care urgently and tell the healthcare team about your travel.

early

Early symptoms

Often appear 2–21 days after exposure. Can resemble other illnesses.

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Chills
  • Loss of appetite

progressive

Progressive symptoms

May develop as illness advances. Severity varies.

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rash
  • Red eyes
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing

severe

Serious warning symptoms

Indicates possible severe disease. Seek urgent medical care.

  • Unexplained bleeding or bruising
  • Severe dehydration
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shock
  • Severe weakness
  • Loss of consciousness
